11 S. Central Ave 7129282240The City of Hartley, Iowa is seeking a Water Certified Plant Operator to manage the City’s Grade II reverse osmosis water plant. Iowa Grade II certification is preferred or ability to obtain a required certification within six months.
This position will work under the management of the Superintendent of Public Works.
Work Environment:
• Lifting of equipment and supplies on a daily basis with a weight range of 50-75 pounds, but
not limited to this range.
• Must be able to be on call 24 hours a day.
• Work weekends as scheduled.
• Be able to arrive on site of an emergency in a minimum amount of time.
• Ability and willingness to work in extreme conditions (i.e. hot and cold temperatures, wind,
rain, dirt, smoke, dust, indoors and outdoors).
• Willingness to work long hours during emergency situations and extreme conditions.
• Limited contact with chemicals (i.e. fluoride, chlorine, acid and other related materials).
• Job will be physically demanding at times.

Experience operating a water plant is a plus. Wage dependent on certification and experience. MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS: Preferably knowledge of computers, Word, Excel, resolving customer complaints, detailed record keeping and testing, communicating effectively in a professional manner, effective oral and written skills, and will need to assist other city departments as needed.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
• Be mechanically inclined.
• Have a basic knowledge of IOSHA regulations:
• Must be able to read and understand city maps and drawings for water and sewer
locations.
• Know how to operate and maintain all equipment at the water department:
jet truck sewer rodder
pipe cutter locator
lawn mowers rammer machine
¾ ton truck and snowplow backhoe
compressor/jackhammer pump controls
grinder standby generator
gas chain saw small shop hand tools
2”, 3” and 4” sewage pumps water testing equipment
tracer snow blower
well house pumps plus other related equipment
Qualifications:
• High school graduate or equivalent
Must have good communication skills and be prompt and courteous when dealing with the public and other employees.
• Grade II Water Treatment, Grade II Water Distribution
• Ability to obtain CDL endorsement to drivers license

To perform a variety of skilled technical duties and semiskilled labor in the operation and maintenance of the City’s reverse osmosis water treatment facilities.
Essential Duties Required:
• Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use: Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant.
• Dumps specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and lime into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
• Monitors panelboard and adjusts controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation, and distribution of water.
• Tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter,
turbidimeter, and conductivity meter.
• Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure.
• Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
• Do water and sewer main repairs.
• Do installation and repair of water valves.
• Take daily readings at pump house, wells, booster and lift stations.
• Assist with daily water testing for chlorine and fluoride.
• Maintain and utilize necessary records.
• Do maintenance, inspection and trouble shooting at all well houses, main pump house, lift stations, and water distribution systems.
• Do repair of water meters and remotes.
• Assist with water meter reading.
Additional Duties Required:
• Mowing grass, snow and ice removal, sewer checking and painting projects.
• Any additional services assigned to the water department.
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) – get pool up and running & maintain CPO License
