Street Operator
Description:
The Street Operator is responsible for performing routine, skilled, manual and maintenance work with city streets, alleys, vehicles, equipment, buildings, grounds and parks.

Duties/Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
1. Bring awareness to the Superintendent of Public Works of the need for city street repair and maintenance.
2. Complete work tasks, operate machinery & equipment, maintain records, monitoring work quality and work schedules, complying with safety rules, policies and requirements.
3. Maintains and repairs streets and alleys including patching potholes and cracks, laying gravel, grading, and sweeping.
4. Paint curbs and road markings.
5. Plows and shovels snow from City streets and sidewalks, and applies sand as needed.
6. Cleans and maintains curb and gutter and storm sewer systems.
7. Assist other city departments as needed.
8. Work is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases and mists.
9. Completes service and maintenance of City vehicles and equipment.
10. Maintains street signs.
11. Builds and repairs concrete as necessary.
12. Attends meetings and seminars to remain current on new information relating to all aspects of the job.
13. Assist with maintaining the yard waste disposal site.
14. Assisting with street projects.
15. Mowing grass, snow and ice removal, culvert installation, storm sewer maintenance, painting highway and street lines, sidewalk replacement, barricading streets, replacing old and missing signage, sanding and salting of City roads, street sweeping, any other duties which are the street department’s responsibility.
16. Spray for weeds and pests as needed and maintaining associated licenses to be able to perform this requirement.
17. Additional services assigned to the street department.
18. Serve on an on-call rotation.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Working knowledge of tools, methods, operations, and materials used in public works maintenance.
• Skill in the operation of street equipment, public works equipment and other vehicles.
• Ability to maintain equipment and vehicles, record information and follow a preventive maintenance program.
• Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with other City employees and the general public.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal direction and prioritize work and perform tasks as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
1. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks. Sometimes requires walking extended distances and time. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
2. Lifting: Raising objects weighing up to 100 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position occasionally and lifting 20 lbs. often. Lifting requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
3. Communication: Written, oral and technical are required. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
4. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound. Must have the ability to monitor several audible communications devices throughout the day while performing other duties.
5. Visual Acuity: Have vision sufficient or corrected sufficiently, to read diagrams/material sheets and apply to hands-on job duties.
6. Ability and willingness to work in extreme conditions (i.e. hot and cold temperatures, wind, rain, dirt, smoke, dust, indoors and outdoors).
7. Required to work in confined spaces and tolerate noise with various machinery and equipment.
8. Willingness to work long hours during emergency situations and extreme conditions.
9. Limited contact with chemicals (i.e. insecticides, pesticides, chlorine) and other related materials.
10. Job may tend to be physically demanding.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid Iowa Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrakes or must be able to obtain within 90 days of hire date.
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Will be expected to be certified in First Aid and CPR.
• Will be willing to obtain other licenses.
• Experience with operating heavy equipment.
• Experience in street department facilities but not a requirement.
• Familiarity with maps, engineering plans, blue prints and utility markings but not required.
